Fear of the Jedi begins today!

Kicking off my final run in Star Wars: The High Republic, an update on Godfather of Hell and a sneak peek of the new Scott Brokenshire book!

Fear of the Jedi begins today!

You wait for ages for a Cavletter post, and then two turn up at once!

I realise I've been conspicuous by my absence in 2025. There have been many reasons, some personal and others very much business. January was nonstop, and February has followed at a similarly pace, meaning that – other than yesterday's big Gwen Stacy news – the Cavletter has had to take a backseat, but I'm back and raring to go.

Thank you, as always, for bearing with me! Now let's get this party started!

THE END OF THE BEGINNING

The big event of the month is the release of Star Wars: The High Republic: Fear of the Jedi #1, which is out... TODAY!

I can’t believe we've reached this point—my final High Republic run, the culmination of everything I’ve been writing for the initiative since 2020!

And that's just one milestone of many this year! 2025 marks ten years since I started writing for Star Wars, fifteen years since I went freelance and twenty years since I got married!

Time has definitely flown!

But back in the present day...

Issue one of Fear of the Jedi sees us welcoming Marika Cresta as our regular artist. She'll be seeing us all the way through to the finale this summer, and the work she's been doing alongside colourist Jim Campbell and letterer Ariana Maher is JUST SPECTACULAR.

(Yes, I know I'm using a lot of capitals, but I'm excited!)

Want a preview? Here's a preview:

(And yes, I did sneak an obscure Doctor Who reference in there, because it made me smile!)

Coming to the end of this journey is going to be emotional, but we have a while to go, so there's plenty to get excited about in the meantime.

And, of course, this particular end is only the beginning of Star Wars: The High Republic. What? You thought that was it for THR? Of course it isn't!

THE FUTURE OF GODFATHER OF HELL

In the midst of all the High Republic and Gwenpool excitement, I have to share a little news about Godfather of Hell, my supernatural noir mini-series from Vault Comics.

Following Diamond Distribution's recent bankruptcy, Vault has decided to move away from monthly issues to focus on graphic novels instead. This means that Godfather of Hell’s run of individual issues has been shelved, but the full story will now be released as a deluxe graphic novel in Summer 2026.

I realise the wait is going to be disappointing for everyone who picked up the first issue, but we’re going to be working hard with Vault to make this a VERY special book.

(Yup, there go the capital letters again!)

I don’t have a lot more I can share right now, but when I do, you’ll be the first to hear.

ADVENTURES IN WRITING

It's been a while since I've done one of these! 2025 started as last year wrapped, with a LOT of comics.

There has been my next non-THR Star Wars project, plus work on Gwenpool.

(I'm so happy I can talk about that now!)

Gwen Stacy returns – meet the all-new, all-deadly Gwenpool!
Announcing my new Marvel series, where nothing is sacred!

In the meantime, Nick Brokenshire and I have also been busy at work with Project Montana, our upcoming book from DSTRLY, launching later this year. The PM team has grown with Lee Loughridge now working on colours and Ed Dukeshire providing our dynamic letters. Meanwhile, the super-talented Emma Price has come on board as our designer and is making everything shine!

I couldn't be happier with how well the first issue is coming together. We're delivering files next week, but here's an exclusive sneak peek just for you lot! Shh! Don't tell anyone!

Beyond comics, I have continued work on the two kids' books I wrote last year --completing copy-edits on the first and editor's notes on the second – and written a short story for an upcoming anthology.

Meanwhile, George Mann and I are waiting for decisions on an audio project and are putting the finishing touches to a TV proposal we want to take out in spring. I've also submitted proposals for a couple of new IP gigs and am working up ideas for a spec movie script and novel. Such is the life of a freelancer, always having one eye on the work you're doing, while hustling for the work that will (hopefully) come. Thankfully, I just signed the contract for a graphic novel project that will see me through to summer, so the first half of the year is looking reasonably stable.

Of course, a new year means a new work tally, complete with a fancy new graphic. Ooooh!

THAT'S ALL FOLKS!

I'm going to leave it there for this week. The newsletter will now get back to its usual schedule, filled with all the usual news, recommendations and answers to your questions.

I'm also going to be posting blog posts (yes, I'm going retro) at www.cavletter.com covering some of the things I used to chat about on social media. I'm not exactly abandoning social media, but I am pulling tight back. My assistant Greg will be handling my Instagram and Threads accounts – primarily to post news – and I'll still be over at Bluesky, but in these uncertain times, I think every writer should have an online space that is theirs and theirs alone! The Cavletter is mine, and I'll be filling it with all my usual nonsense!

In case you missed it, I posted my first blog a couple of weeks ago – kicking off a series of posts exploring my ongoing exploration of all things folk!

Myth and Folkery: A tale of two wassails!
Hail to thee, oh apple tree!

Don't worry, I'll keep posting links to the individual posts in future newsletters but try to keep an eye on www.cavletter.com too! You never know when a new blog post will pop.

Until next time, look after yourself and each other,
