A perfect Sunday with...Jim Zub
French toast, Weird Tales and comic book hugs!
Every week, a top writer, artist, actor or creator reveals how they’d fill their perfect Sunday, sharing their favourite comfort reads, movies, food… anything that would make their weekend great.
Today, by Crom, it's the turn of Jim Zub, writer of Conan the Barbarian: Battle of the Black Stone!
Jim's perfect Sunday… brunch
French toast, made the way my grandmother does it, essentially deep frying pieces of egg-soaked bread with cinnamon in canola oil or bacon fat. Add in some bacon or sausages on the side, with some Canadian maple syrup drizzled on top, and both the smell and taste are off the charts. Intensely indulgent, but I do love it from time to time.
Jim's perfect Sunday… read
I just finished Cimmerian September, with fans of Conan the Barbarian rereading the classic short stories and commenting on them, so Robert E. Howard and pulp are on my mind more than ever, so let's go with that.
Short stories from Weird Tales make for a potent quick read. Most of them can be finished in one sitting.
Jim's perfect Sunday… comic
Jeff Smith's Bone series is pretty much perfect, both in terms of narrative and art, It's a big ol' comic book hug.
I collected the original hardcover collections as they were released and can tell you exactly where I lived and what was happening in my life when I bought and read each one. That's how formative they are to me.
Jim's perfect Sunday… movie
Anything by Studio Ghibli, but Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso in particular. I know them so well, but they never cease to delight me and tug at my heartstrings.
Jim's perfect Sunday... TV binge
The new Shogun TV series absolutely knocked my wife and I out in terms of quality an execution, but I don't think that quite feels right for a relaxing Sunday watch, so let's go for trippy black & white episodes of The Twilight Zone.
Jim's perfect Sunday… podcast
The You're Wrong About podcast series is wonderful for the way it dives into subjects and rips the veil off assumptions around historical events and pop culture moments that have become entrenched in the public conscience.
Jim's perfect Sunday… album
The Crash Test Dummies - The Ghosts That Haunt Me from 1991 has a peppy enjoyable air that feels like hanging out on a Sunday.
Jim's perfect Sunday… treat
Board games or tabletop RPGs with friends are my preferred way to share time with people I care about, building amazing memories and laughing at every turn. TTRPGs taught me how to collaborate and build stories and I learn a ton about people by gaming with them.
On the board game front, our current favourites include Tiger and Dragon, Cthulhu: Death May Die, Mechs VS Minions, and Kill Doctor Lucky.
Conan the Barbarian: Battle of the Black Stone #1 is out now from Titan Comics.
Conan of Cimmeria is haunted by shadows, living nightmares connected to a mysterious eye symbol etched in black stone.
An unspeakable evil looms over the Hyborian Age and every age connected to it… and it will take more than a lone barbarian to stop its relentless march upon time, space, and sanity.
Battle of the Black Stone, an epic new Conan event from Heroic Signatures and Titan Comics, begins HERE, from Jim Zub (Conan the Barbarian, Dungeons & Dragons) and artist Jonas Scharf (Dark X-Men, Basilisk).
